How to make sure your Hair Products last longer.

Hi loves!!! I have a cold and I love being pampered so please show me love in the comment section lol. But that’s not why we are here. As the title suggests, I’m going to share a few tips for us girls on a budget on how to minimize your hair products and make them last longer. I actually go months before I have to buy new hair products because I’m skilled with managing lol. So here goes:

1. Your Shampoo is for your scalp only. Except you dunk your hair in products which you really shouldn’t be doing, shampoo your scalp only. I mean how dirty can your hair be if you cleanse weekly at most. After you’ve cleansed your scalp, run the suds/soapy water through the length of your hair to clean it. You can decide to shampoo your hair 1 out of 4 times you wash.

2. A little should go a long way with your conditioners. If not, you should consider changing it. The more conditioner you slab onto your hair doesn’t really mean the job will get done better. It’s usually even written on most products to use a little at a time. Also, focus mostly on the tip of your hair with this product.

3. Alternate between DIY and store bought products. Honey, bananas, avocados and bla bla can work for prepoos, conditioning etc and will help you save on your store bought products. Be creative. Go online and check for DIYs you can try on your hair. I have a couple on the blog too. Feel free to check. By doing this, you’re giving your products a break.

4. Stop bathing your hair in oil! lol you really don’t have to.. Oil is meant for your scalp ladies! Except you’re doing a pre poo, try and oil just your scalp… a bottle of your favorite oil should last months (minus prepoo). I have a separate bottle for pre poo and hot oil treatments and they are the cheap stuff because you wash it out afterwards. Do this sparingly so you don’t have oil dripping from your scalp.

5. Water. How did I forget this? Water is the cheapest thing you can use on your hair and is probably the best too. Spray with water when your hair is dry. Your spray bottle can be 80% water or even 100% as long as you are sealing in that moisture. Use water a lot. It’s almost free.

6. Whip your own Shea butter. I know you like how soft that Shea butter you buy is and how it smells like lavender. Well guess what? You can save yourself some money by buying from a trusted vendor down the road and whipping it yourself at home with some drops of your favorite oil. Same goes for coconut oil my friends. This is Nigeria.

7. You don’t need all that fancy stuff. Lol you really don’t. You don’t need expensive hair products, you don’t need to try all the hair masks your favorite bloggers are trying etc. stick with what you know works for you even (especially) if it’s cheap.
8. Sometimes, stretch wash day. Yup, I said it. Except you sink your hair in products which again, you shouldn’t, you really don’t have to wash it twice a week or every 2-3 days. I sometimes go 2 weeks without. Not saying you should though lol. But sometimes, especially when the budget for the month is tight, stretch your wash days.
9. Check the expiry dates on products before you buy. So you won’t have to throw out your products because they expired. Make sure that you have a good year at least from the day you purchase.

10. Store your products properly and accordingly. Avoid spills and stuff. Store butters and oils in the proper temperature so they don’t melt and waste. Make sure your lids are nice and tight after use.

11. Visit the salon. And let them spoil you a little with some of their own products as long as it’s the good kind. Do this once in a while though so it won’t cause a bigger dent in your pocket.

With these few points of mine… lol. I’ll keep updating this post if I think of more ways to save you girls some money on your journey. Please if you have any ideas, leave it in the comment sections so we can learn from you and don’t forget my ‘get well soon Ella’ lol.
Thank you so much for stopping by. It means a whole lot. I’ll be teaching you how to make an affordable weave/wig look more expensive in the next post so please come back.

Love, Ella

  1. Lol.. I keep telling people over and over again to have sense when it comes to buying products for natural hair, I haven’t used a store bought deep conditioner in months and my hair is thriving.. I think the major problem is that most people are reluctant to learn so they just buy any product endorsed by their favourite youtuber or vlogger… I mean I blog hair but I have friends who have a lot more products than I have. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚………
    Get well soon dear.

  2. This is a good post. ๐Ÿ’• I wash every 10days. And no fancy stuff sef. Some people have more than one product doing the exact same thing. I just have one thing that I stick to. And use it all up.
I hope you are better now. โค๏ธ
